IIIT, Hyderabad started the M.Tech. programme in 2001,
with a vision "to enable civil engineers and architects to
increase their versatility in building science by combining
their insight into complex building processes with
application, design and development of diverse IT tools".
The objective is to train the students in developing
designs that concentrate on total performance over the
lifecycle of buildings using computer-aided techniques.

The Program Takeaway
On successful completion, the graduates:
- Will have in-depth professional knowledge to handle
technical problems concerning planning, designing
and implementation of building projects
- Will effectively interface with specialists involved in
projects
- Will have the knowledge and skills to develop IT
applications for building science
Thrust Areas
- Computer aided integrated building design
- Earthquake resistant buildings
- Resource Optimization using IT tools
- Intelligent Building Technologies
- Total Building Performance
Programme structure
Students enrolled in this programme take 5
compulsory courses covering basic IT and 7 domain
courses that cover the domain comprehensively. In
addition, specialized courses are offered in two major areas: Building
Automation & Building Services and Structures.
These courses address key issues related to effective
use of IT in the building industry.
Admission criterion
Selection for admission to the programme is based on
multiple indices. They include: qualification - graduate
degree in architecture or civil engineering; performance in
the entrance exam conducted by the institute; Proficiency
in Mathematics, Physics and Programming; Sound domain
knowledge; Inclination to learn & apply knowledge in a
multi-disciplinary environment.
Focus on IT
The programme equips architects and civil engineers with
the knowledge of IT, so that they can use them effectively
in the building process right from conception to use and
demolition of buildings. The emphasis is on requirement
formulation and development of new IT tools, covering:
- Finite Element Method
- Structural Analysis and Design
- Quality assurance, estimation, costing, tender
- Intelligent buildings, energy simulation, building
services and functional efficiency
- 3-D Visualization
