Projects

Ø

Monitoring of Distribution transformers (DTs) using cellular communication technology.      [Sponsored by Central Power Research Institute, Bangalore]

As distribution transformers are seldom monitored, this project was aimed at developing a real time monitoring and control system for DTs using cellular communication technology. This system continuously monitors the DT parameters and generates alarms in case of any contingencies.

Technologies Used: Linux, MySQL, C, Qt, Web interface using Python and AJAX

Ø

Multipurpose Unmanned Vehicle for rescue and Military applications.
[Secured first prize in VI MANTRA 2006]

A small unmanned manned car has been developed, which is intended to used for rescue operations. The vehicle can be used for real-time surveillance, reconnaissance and to guide trapped people out of dangerous areas.

Technologies Used

Hardware:-PCI-6229, PXI-1411, PDA, onboard PC and sensors with 802.11g Wi-Fi

Software:-Lab VIEW 7.0, Lab view for Pocket PC-2002, NI Vision and Motion Control.

Ø

Mobile Phone as Universal Remote Controller
To provide a home automation system with aid of a mobile phone which controls different devices such as light, fan, TV, door lock. A home automation gateway has been designed which interacts with different devices in home using different communication protocols such as IR, PLCC, ZigBee and Bluetooth etc.

Technologies Used: Symbian C++ using series 60 SDK,Keil cross compiler.

Ø

Cool Roof Demonstration.

This project aims with testing efficiency of different coolroof materials LBNL California (LAWRENCE BEKLEY NATIONAL LABARATORY) in urban Islands. My role was to set up Data loggers and sensors in a building. Data logged from 30 different sensors (such as HVAC, Lightning and weather data) in each building was recorded in logger’s memory. Data were downloaded remotely about once a week using Campbell Scientific PC 400 software and a modem connected to the RS232 port of the data logger. Collected Data was analyzed for different roof surfaces and energy saving for installations of COOLROOFS was observed.

  Ø

Lab VIEW based Building Automation (FP_200 Ethernet controller).

The project envisages exploring/integrating/adapting different industrial automation tools and Information Technologies for Building Automation. In this project we explored LabVIEW (an industrial automation tool); a graphical user interface has been provided to control Water Level, Light Intensity and Access control system from Internet developed using LabVIEW VIs. Also the same can be published to web servers so that other users too can see the status.

 Technologies Used:

Hardware: FP_200 Ethernet controller.

Software: Lab VIEW 7.1, MAX.

  Ø

Design of Low Cost Watt-Hour wireless smart Energy meter.

A prototype energy meter was designed using ADE7753 chip to monitor load profile of the individual equipment. Basic parameters such as Vrms, Irms and kWh are stored in onboard memory at regular intervals, and collected data was also sent to a monitoring unit using ZigBee as a wireless medium.

Technologies Used:

Hardware: ADE7753 and Rabbit 3000.

Software: Dynamic C.

  Ø

Design of ARM based interface card for M-bus 1434 water meter.

An interface card was designed using ARM7 based microcontroller. A prototype system consists of M-bus 1434 water meter, interface card and GSM modem. The card communicates with water meter using M-bus 1434 protocol and collected data was sent to monitoring unit using GSM modem connected to serial port of ARM controller.

Technologies Used:

Hardware: LPC2129, GSM modem and M-bus 1434 meter.

Software: Keil compiler.

Thesis

A microcontroller based infrared (IR) attachment for the motion sensor to control the air conditioner, to save energy during unoccupied periods.

Energy efficiency is a major area of concern in buildings. Efforts are being made all over the world to make buildings energy efficient. In India major energy consumption is due to air conditioning in buildings. According to recent survey, 26% electricity power can be saved by switching of lighting and air conditioning systems when the space is unoccupied in an office or buildings. The proposed system uses a new method for operating the devices known as IR based attachment to a motion sensor. In this method the compressor of the air conditioner system is controlled by a microcontroller based infrared (IR) attachment, depending on the output status of the motion detector. Infrared (IR) based attachment maximizes life cycle of air condition system by soft switching of the compressor. This intelligent way of controlling the device saves energy and makes the life simpler.

Hardware: ATMEGA8L.

Software: AVR Studio.
