SUMMARY

Highway design engineers face a lot of problems in the process of design, as they need to access a large amount of data to reach their goals. They have to go through a large number of standards provided by Indian Road Congress. This database system provides a user friendly interface over this large amount of data, where user could skip all the complex design calculations, while obtaining an approximate design of the road section. User need not even worry about different parameters stored in tables. He has to enter only basic input parameters such as rainfall, terrain, type of highway, number of lanes etc.
This tool still has a lot of scope of further development and expansion such as graphical presentation of the designed section and more complex design calculations.

Development Tools:
Database management (back end): My-SQL/SQL Server 7.0 (available in both)
GUI and programming (front end): Visual Basic

SALIENT FEATURES

It could be used in highway design for the following:
1. Geometric Design
2. Pavement Design
Some of the features of the project are:

  • Conception and Development of an E-R model for the database application

  • Mapping of E-R model into a Relational model

  • Provision of key constraints and referential integrity constraints

  • Normalization of relations up to BCNF (Boyce-Codd normal form) based on functional dependencies

  • Population of relations with real time data

  • Database connectivity using ActiveX Data objects (ADO) in VB

  • Development of a GUI based front end in Visual Basic.
